March was a historic month for the Korean brands.
With the recent debuts of the Hyundai Ioniq 5 and Kia EV6, March was a historic month for the Korean brands. Built on a new dedicated EV platform, these models mark the start of a new electric era for the two automakers. This isn't the only reason why March was a momentous month for Hyundai and Kia, however, because both companies achieved record sales in America last month.
In March, Hyundai sold 75,403 units in the US - a staggering 115 percent increase compared to March 2020 when the pandemic began to grip the world. This was Hyundai's highest-ever monthly sales in America. Retail sales were also up by 153 percent in March.
With 15,744 units sold, the Tucson was Hyundai's best-selling model in the US last month, an increase of 159 percent compared to March 2020 thanks to the launch of the all-new fourth-generation model. The Kona and Palisade also had their best-ever sales month with 10,416 and 9,184 units sold respectively, while the Santa Fe achieved its best-ever March with 11,538 models sold, up by 62 percent compared to March last year.
Hyundai is enjoying a strong start to 2021 in the US with its highest Q1 retail sales ever at 157,470 units, an increase of 38 percent compared to Q1 2020. Total Q1 sales were also up by 28 percent.
"It was a historic U.S. sales performance in March and Q1 for Hyundai," said Randy Parker, senior vice president of National Sales at Hyundai Motor America. "Strong consumer confidence, stable inventory, a compelling lineup, attention-grabbing advertising and the efforts of our dealer partners all came together to deliver these results. With the all-new Tucson, our highest-volume model, arriving at dealerships we will build on this momentum and continue to gain market share."
The recent launches of new models like the Seltos, K5, Sorento, and Carnival also helped Kia achieve its best-ever sales month and best-ever Q1 sales in America. In March, Kia delivered 66,523 vehicles in the US, up from 45,413 in March 2020. The Kia Telluride continues to be a strong seller with 8,591 units sold last month, which was the SUV's best-ever March sales.
It couldn't beat the Forte, however, which was Kia's best-selling model in March with 10,459 units sold, up from 7,598 in the same month last year. The K5 and Seltos also had their best-ever sales month with 8,717 and 6,497 units sold respectively. Like Hyundai, Kia achieved its best-ever Q1 sales in the US with 159,550 units sold, compared to 137,945 in Q1 2020.
"After outpacing the industry last year, Kia is on the move again in 2021 and setting sales records as more new customers discover the world-class design and quality built into every one of our sporty sedans and capable SUVs," said Sean Yoon, president and CEO of Kia Motors North America. "The successful launches of the all-new Sorento and Carnival have added to the momentum established by the Telluride and helped push the Kia brand to new heights with even greater potential for future growth."
