2022 Tucson gets a sporty and an eco-friendly option.
Hyundai came out of the gate strong this year with the new 2022 Tucson and the momentum seems to be continuing. The daring new SUV design premiered at the end of last year and has already entered production in the US. As a bonus, itstarts at $1,200 less than the outgoing modelwith a base price of $24,950. We knew a hybrid model and an N Line were coming, and now Hyundai has shown us the goods.
The plug-in hybrid model comes with a 261 hp, 1.6-liter turbocharged, direct-injected hybrid powertrain with a six-speed automatic transmission. Its battery is much larger than the standard hybrid (1.49 to 13.8 kWh), yielding an electric-only drive range of 32 miles and an overall fuel economy of 30 mpg with all-wheel drive.
All three trims for the Tucson plug-in hybrid come with mechanical all-wheel-drive as standard and with a mix of modes for different surfaces, including snow. They also feature Plug-in Hybrid Level-II charging capability, which takes just two hours to charge using the 7.2-kW on-board charger. Hyundai also promises it paid attention to the plug-in hybrid's driving dynamics with its e-handling technology. The system applies torque from the electric motor to individual wheels, whether adding braking at the front or power to the rear, to improve cornering ability.
The Tucson N Line is an appearance package giving the Korean SUV a sporty flair inside and out. On the outside, it includes the N Line bumpers and front grille along with black side mirrors, window surrounds, headlamp bezels, and black 19-inch black alloy wheels. Rounding out the exterior are N Line badges, a dual-tipped exhaust, and an N Line rear spoiler. The interior features more N Line badging, a mixture of leather and fabric for the seats, red accents on the seats and door trim, metal pedals and door sill plates, and a Bose premium audio system. It offers the option for the N Line exclusive paint color Red Crimson, as well as Ash Black, White Pearl and Titan Gray.
The N Line trim starts at $30,600, while the base Blue Hybrid trim starts at $29,050, the mid-level SEL Premium is $31,650, and the Limited comes in at $37,350.
