Hyundai HB20 and HB20X Debut in Brazil

/ Comments

Korean automaker sets sights on Brazilian market with introduction of locally produced HB20 supermini and HB20X soft-roader.

Hyundai has unveiled its new HB20 subcompact and HB20X crossover models at the Sao Paulo Motor Show in Brazil. The new HB range will be Hyundai's first family of cars specifically designed for the Brazilian market. The HB20 was also designed in the country and all models will be manufactured at the Japanese carmaker's new plant on Piracicaba near Sao Paulo, which is capable of churning out 150,000 cars per annum. Saloon and SUV variants will be introduced next year.

The HB 20 namplate combines the initials of Hyundai Brazil with the 20 from the Hyundai i20 sold in Europe, whose fluidic sculpture design language has influenced the HB20's styling. Hyundai says the HB20 has been adapted to suit Brazilian buyers and features a revised exterior and different interior. "This new car is optimized to the taste of Brazilian consumers and the driving conditions in this country, with years of dedication from our engineers," said Chang Kyun Han, President of Hyundai Motors Brazil. "I guarantee with pride that HB20 will change the perception of Brazilian customers in the small car segment."

Engine choices for the HB20 include 80hp 1.0-liter and 128hp 1.6-liter flex-fuel units mated to a 5-speed manual. A 4-speed automatic can be specified on the 1.6 or on the HB20X crossover model. The front-drive HB20X is distinguished from the five-door hatch by its redesigned bumper, hexagonal grille, fog lamps, and headlamps. It also gets silver-colored mirror caps, 15-inch dark grey alloys, silver roof bars, a higher riding suspension and a plusher interior with touches of chrome and blue stitching. The HB20 will go on sale in Brazil this month starting at 28,000 Reals, or about $13,800.
