After sweeping the 2022 World Car of the Year awards with the Ioniq 5, Hyundai explains how the five-year development program was born and how the automaker came into existence.

In the cutthroat world of car sales, manufacturers hold on to every win and tend to boast proudly when one of their cars does well on the road or track. This has been the story of car advertising since the dawn of the automobile, and Hyundai isn't ashamed to partake in this tradition. The Korean car manufacturer has launched a new documentary showcasing the origin and success story of one of its most innovative cars, the Ioniq 5. After sweeping the 2022 World Car of the Year awards, Hyundai has put together a fascinating documentary about how the brand has evolved from its humble beginnings with its first car, the Pony, to the award-winning EV that is inspired by that first Korean car. The short version of that documentary is embedded below.

Hyundai has been very vocal over the fact that it wants all of its cars to be 100% environmentally friendly and is on its way with the launch of its second EV, the Ioniq 6, which is based on the same platform as the Ioniq 5, E-GMP. This will be the foundation of many new Hyundai EVs to come. In the new documentary titled IONIQ - Defying Convention, Hyundai sheds light on the factors that have made its first outing into the world of EVs so successful. The Ioniq 5, the first car in the Ioniq family, has been at the receiving end of a number of global awards and has shown strong sales in the US and abroad. The documentary is narrated by Erin Baker, one of 100 World Car of the Year jurors from across the globe, explaining which criteria the judges consider as they make their decisions. It also features interviews with employees of the company and researchers who played a part in the development of the Ioniq 5, giving an insight into the reasoning behind the body design, the cabin, and more.

"At Hyundai Motor, we have relentlessly defied conventional ideas to embody innovation as our DNA," said Jay Chang, President and CEO of Hyundai Motor Company. "The documentary film Defying Convention represents everyone at Hyundai Motor who took part in making IONIQ a success story with a progressive mindset." The documentary also touches on the future of the Ioniq brand, including the upcoming Ioniq 6 and 7 and exciting high-performance electrified N models. Hyundai is involved in other industries, too, including robotics, flying cars, and the development of smart cities, and explains that sustainable mobility is a universal mindset that must be applied to all aspects of transportation, not just cars.
