There has been a lot of chatter lately regarding alternative proposition for the heavy trucking industry. Tesla has made headlines with its upcoming electric semi-truck, meanwhile, Daimler has revealed a pair of electric trucks under its Freightliner brand. Electric trucks could be an excellent solution for short-range shipping requirements but what about longer trips? Batteries still have a limited range with longe charge times, so we need to find an alternative until the technology has time to improve.

Hyundai believes it has found an immediate answer in the form of hydrogen fuel cells. The Korean automaker is set to reveal a new hydrogen fuel cell-powered electric truck concept called the HDC-6 Neptune, which will be revealed at the North American Commercial Vehicle Show in Atlanta next week on October 29, 2019.

Hyundai says the truck is named after the Roman god Neptune, symbolizing the hydrogen-powered natural elements of the sea. Hydrogen fuel-cell vehicles only emit water vapor from the tailpipe, making them among the cleanest forms of transportation existing today.

"We have cemented the fuel cell technology leadership position in the passenger vehicle sector with the world's first commercially produced fuel cell EV and the second generation fuel cell EV, the Nexo," said Edward Lee, Head of Commercial Vehicle Business Division at Hyundai Motor Company. "With the introduction of HDC-6 Neptune, in addition to the road-proven Xcient fuel cell truck, we expand our technology leadership into the commercial vehicle sector by unveiling our vision of how fuel cell electric trucks can resolve the environmental equations of widely used commercial vehicles and our commitment to creating a decarbonized society."

The HDC-6 Neptune features a futuristic Art Deco design, which is styled to look like 1930's streamliner railway trainsets. Alongside the truck, Hyundai Translead will reveal a new Nitro ThermoTech eco-friendly, high-performance refrigerated trailer. Hyundai hasn't mentioned any range estimates given that this is just a concept, but perhaps the company will release some loose figures during the truck's official reveal.
