Hyundai Has A Problem With Explosive Seatbelts

Recall / Comments

This could be a ticking timebomb, literally.

Despite Hyundai's ability to launch excellent products, the Korean carmaker, which is renowned for its reliability, can't seem to avoid recalls, especially in the last year. Early in 2021, we reported on one of the most expensive recalls ever: Hyundai had to recall 82,000 electric vehicles, including the domestic version of the Hyundai Kona, for potential battery fires. As if that wasn't bad enough, Hyundai and Kia faced another recall affecting nearly half a million cars at the beginning of October for backward turn signals. Just when Hyundai thought it was in the clear, another recall strikes, and this time it's for seat belt pretensioners that could explode. That's not ideal.

Thankfully the recall is smaller in scale than the previous two, and only affects 978 cars, including the 2021 Hyundai Elantra, Elantra HEV, Venue, and Genesis GV80 vehicles. The 2022 Genesis GV70 is also affected. According to the manufacturer, the front driver-side and passenger-side seat belt pretensioners could explode during a crash. Hyundai said that the cars affected had pretensioners fitted with "pyrotechnic-type pretensioners" that could explode in the case of a serious accident, which in turn could cause more damage, and in extreme cases, even death due to metal fragments being scattered throughout the cabin, almost like a hand grenade.

This is ironic, as Hyundai and Genesis have spent massive amounts of money on advanced safety tech like the Genesis GV70's ability to prevent child heatstroke.

In one reported case, the exploding pretensioners detonated during an accident, sending metal fragments all over the cabin, with some pieces actually puncturing a passenger's leg. It's unclear how serious the injury was, but there's no situation when an explosion inside a car is ever positive. Hyundai is currently preparing dealerships to replace the faulty part (at no cost to the vehicle owner) and is expected to send out notification letters to these customers on December 10, 2021. Affected Hyundai owners can contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 or visit the agency's website for more information.
