We'll find out why at the 2019 LA Auto Show next week.
The 2019 LA Auto Show starts in just a few days. Since the show is aimed at the US market, expect SUVs to dominate this year's event. New models that will debut at the show include the Ford Mustang-inspired SUV, the Audi e-tron Sportback, and the Volkswagen ID. Space Vizzion concept. Joining them will be a new "groundbreaking" SUV concept from Hyundai, which will be the seventh concept that showcases the automaker's Sensuous Sportiness design language following the Le Fil Rouge and Grandmaster concepts.
"We pursue innovative solutions in design and add emotional value to our product experience through sensuous sportiness design language," said SangYup Lee, Senior Vice President and Head of Hyundai Global Design Center.
Hyundai has confirmed the SUV concept is powered by a plug-in hybrid powertrain, but no technical details have been released yet so the output and electric range is a mystery. Teaser photos show the SUV will feature a sleek design incorporating a sloping roofline, long hood, a roof-mounted spoiler, and slim headlights and taillights. A short 15-second long teaser video also previews other design elements such as a full-width LED light bar.
A lack of door handles or side mirrors also give the SUV a clean-looking profile. Like the Le Fil Rouge and Grandeur Face Lift, the new SUV concept will also feature illuminated daytime running lights, which Hyundai calls the "Hidden Signature Lamp," while the grille includes active air shutters that close when the SUV is stationary and open when required to control airflow to the powertrain and improve aerodynamics and fuel efficiency.
It remains to be seen if the concept will enter production, but it could preview the design of future Hyundai SUVs such as the next-generation Tucson, which Hyundai claims will have a bold new design that will make people "freak out."
