Peugeot have announced their intention of launching a hatchback that will rekindle memories of the iconic 205 GTI. The all-new Peugeot 208 will be fitted with its most powerful 1.6-liter twin-cam turbocharged 4-cylinder engine and its expected that the 154hp version will feature in the mainstream GTI. The 204hp is set for the sportier model, which could well be called GTI Racing. The quicker of the two will offer sub 7.0-second 0-60mph acceleration and a top speed exceeding 140mph.

The GTI will have a uniquely designed grille and front splitter, unique wheels, and a rally-derived rear roof spoiler. It will also boast sports seats and GTI-only interior. The clearest influences of the design style according to design boss Gilles Vidal are last year's SR-1 roadster concept and the eighties 205 hatchback. The GTI should be in showrooms by the end of 2012, as mainstream 208 sales begin next summer. As more details become available they'll be shared accordingly. Rendering courtesy of AutoCar.
