The iconic Volkswagen camper van could be making a return, this according to a company board member. Dr. Heinz-Jakob Neusser let the news slip to Autocar, saying that the concept would draw heavily on the original camper van in terms of design. First the wide, solid, D-Pillar, second the boxy design of the center section and, thirdly, the front end must have a very short overhang. The distance from the A-pillar to the front end must be very short."

The new van would have an electric motor powering the front wheels and batteries stored under the floor. There have been a few camper van concepts in recent years, such as the ones seen here, but now could be the time when Volkswagen takes things seriously. The Volkswagen Group's CEO recently said that the brand had become "complacent" in North America. Sales have been down in the US, and while an electric camper van wouldn't right the ship by itself it could signal a brand refresh. If anything modern hippies will welcome the return of an eco-friendly mobile shag pad.
