"Pure driving. Pure racing. That makes me happy." - Senna
Earlier this month marked the 20 year anniversary of Ayrton Senna’s death. The three-time Formula 1 World Champion suffered a fatal crash at the San Marino Grand Prix in 1994 while behind the wheel of his Williams race car. In honor of the legendary and iconic Senna, we decided to watch (again) the 2010 award-winning documentary that bears his name. Senna" is an excellent showcase of the man, both on a personal and competitive level.
While there are several narrators, the main voice is Senna’s. Packed with extensive F1 footage, this was the first time that Senna was able to tell his story, reveal his demons, and a chance for everyone to witness his outright courage and drive to win.
His rivalry with Alain Prost is also a primary focus of the film, but by the end, the two repaired their relationship. Prost served as one of the pallbearers at Senna’s funeral. "Senna" is a touching and inspiring tribute to one of the finest race car drivers the world has ever seen. It’s worth watching again. And if you haven’t had the chance, well, make it happen. It’s hard not to get choked up at the end.
