The 1950s were truly a magical time for the American automobile.
America's love affair with the automobile was already in full swing before World War II, but the relationship was fully consummated once the conflict ended. America was on top of the world at that time and the economic boom that followed was further proof that people loved to buy and be involved with cars. A wonderful era of eccentric and beautiful designs soon followed and the automobile was forever cemented into the hearts of Americans.
While Europe's auto industry eventually recovered from the ashes of war, the real party was happening in America. As this collection of photos from a 1951 issue of Life Magazine show, even going to a place such as a garage or car wash had sex appeal. Photos courtesy of Allan Grant/Life Archive.
