Infiniti has shown off a new limited-edition paint color for the range-topping Q50 Red Sport 400 sedan, with Black Opal Metallic iridescent paint added to the palette for 2023. The color-changing effect of iridescence is a natural phenomenon occurring in everything from peacocks to butterflies and natural stonework, where changing light creates the effect of different colors. Such is the principle behind Black Opal Metallic, which is inspired by the opal mineraloid found in Australia and shimmers in various blue, green, and purple hues. Infiniti even draws parallels between this new color and the iconic Midnight Purple paintwork made famous on the Skyline GT-R and brought back for the GT-R T-Spec, which just received a facelift for 2024. And before you chime in with Infiniti having no right to use the Skyline's historical clout, the Q50 is sold in Japan as the Nissan Skyline.

The particular color will only be available as part of a limited edition Black Opal Edition package at a fee of $2,200. Infiniti claims it will be available in limited numbers nationwide, but just how many it will be limited to remains a mystery.

The Q50 Black Opal Edition package also includes satin black exterior logos and badges and an exposed carbon fiber spoiler.

It can be specced on both rear- and all-wheel-driven Red Sport 400 models, which start at an MSRP of $56,500.

2023 models only receive one other update, with Infiniti Premium Care integrated maintenance now included as standard.

For those at the back that have missed the Infiniti Red Sport models, the Q50 and its coupe twin, the Q60, its where we first experienced the awesome 3.0-liter VR-series twin-turbo V6 that found its way, as it needed to, into the latest generation Nissan Z sports car. The engine packs 400 horsepower and 350 lb-ft of torque, and the Q50 Red Sport comes with upgraded brakes and Infiniti's Dynamic Digital Suspension.

We've said before that the Q50 and Q60 are cars that you would buy for the engine more than the rest of the vehicle, and that still rings true. But, if you're looking for a sedan that absolutely rips in a straight line with one of the strongest turbocharged V6s around, this Iridescent Black Opal Metallic would be a fantastic addition to the car.
