It is becoming nearly impossible to keep up with the myriad of body styles and configurations on offer from premium car manufacturers such as BMW and the list is only growing longer. Need a subcompact sedan crossover hatchback SUV? You'll probably find one. BMW, who's ever-popular 3 Series is still a strong competitor in the compact executive sedan market, is getting ready to add an electric sibling to its ranks, and while the rather awkward Gran Turismo has been dropped, BMW continues to add new shapes and sizes. The latest example is the "3 Series Gran Limousine" that's set to enter the Indian market as a long-wheelbase version of the standard 3 Series sedan.

The Chinese market adores long-wheelbase versions of run-of-the-mill cars such as the Audi A6L, but India is now showing a strong interest in these types of cars, and BMW has taken notice. The German manufacturer is getting ready to launch a longer 3 Series for the Indian market, and instead of carrying the industry-standard 'LWB' moniker, it will be called the 3 Series Gran Limousine. Yes, it is a tad ostentatious, but it sounds pretty cool. Unlike some stretched versions of smaller sedans, BMW has done an excellent job of hiding the Grand Limousine's growth spurt. The point of the exercise is to increase legroom in the rear, and the Grand Limousine delivers, offering 5 Series levels of space.

The extended car also offers improved high-speed stability but detracts from the 3 Series' naturally sporty persona. To be fair, those buying this car will be more concerned with comfort than carving corners through canyon roads. The Gran Limousine is available for pre-booking on BMW India's website and can be reserved for 50,000 Rupees ($684). Don't expect the 3 Series Gran Limousine to reach our shores any time soon.
