Promotion for the latest superhero movie goes beyond a name on a car.
Racing liveries can get pretty involved, especially when the sponsor pays big bucks. And nobody has more money to spend than Hollywood. When it comes to fantasy movies, the studios have been known not only to emblazon the racing cars themselves with the film's logos, but also get the members of the team to dress up in ridiculous outfits. At the 2005 Monaco Grand Prix, the nascent Red Bull Racing team dressed its pit crew up in Storm Trooper and Darth Vader costumes to promote "Star Wars: Episode III".
At the same race the next year, David Coulthard scored the team's first podium finish, and stepped up wearing a red cape to promote "Superman Returns". Now it's Audi's turn, promoting the release of "Iron Man 3". During the DTM race at Hockenheim last weekend, Audi driver Adrien Tambay and his crew fielded their RS5 in an Iron Man livery, but also dressed themselves up in Iron Man costumes for both driver and crew. The red and gold suits were made up specially by Alpinestars, with matching helmets from Uvex. The special equipment will make a return for the next DTM race at Brands Hatch in the UK on May 19.
