Is the Porsche 918 the Hypercar of the Future?

Test Drive

Given its ability to combine hi-tech with insane performance, it could very well turn out to be.

The Porsche 918 Spyder has arrived and the verdict is in: the car is outright incredible. Did we expect anything less from Porsche? Of course note, but what makes the 918 Spyder different from its halo car predecessor, the Carrera GT, is that it’s a hybrid. There’s an electric motor at the front axle and a hybrid setup at the rear, a combo that produces a total of 874 horsepower and 944 lb-ft of torque. It can also drive in pure electric mode for up to 20 miles on a full charge.

And at the flick of a switch, you can ignite its naturally aspirated engine for that familiar Porsche performance. It’s a hell of a halo car and it may just turn out to hold the hypercar formula of the future, and Motor Trend goes for a test drive to find out if that's really the case.
