Dropping to a 5.2-liter V12 isn't the only downsizing the DB11's gonna do.
Ever since Mercedes-Benz's parent company Daimler AG bought a 5 percent stake in Aston Martin, we've known the British sports car maker would eventually end up adopting Mercedes tech. We've already seen a modified version of MB's infotainment system make its way into the DB11, and heard rumors of a future Aston model sharing a sports car platform with Mercedes. Above all, though, we know Aston Martin will be pinching the 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 for the upcoming Vantage - and we might have seen the first look of the DB11 with that very motor.
Spotted by YouTube user 'Supercarsfromeu' near the Nurburgring, this camouflaged Aston Martin DB11 development mule can just about be heard emitting an exhaust note that, whilst very faint, is subtly different enough from the V12 that we're left to make the educated assumption that a V8 is propelling this particular DB11. The fact the test driver was so light footed on the gas pedal when the cameras were rolling leads us to further assume that the DB being shown here has an engine under the hood that Aston Martin would prefer to keep under wraps for the time being. The only question now is: will this Mercedes V8 be an M177 or an M178?
Actually, that's a fib, as there's still plenty more that we still don't know about this motor.
Autocar is suggesting the V8-powered DB11 will have 525-hp to play with (75 mechanical ponies down on the 5.2-liter V12, but roughly 20 or so horsepower up on the C63S and AMG GTS), but everything else is still a mystery. Hopefully we won't have to wait too long before additional details are drip fed to us.
