That Ford 5.0-liter V8 under the hood may have something to do with it.
We’ve been longtime fans of the Mazda MX-5. What may come across as girly to those who aren’t in the know, is really one of the greatest and purist sports cars out there. Power has always come from a naturally aspirated four pot, which is just fine for many happy owners. But then again, there’s no such thing as too much power. Luckily for owners, Ford's 5.0-liter V8 just happens to fit in that engine bay. A pairing like this just had to be done, and fortunately someone has obliged.
This first-gen 1991 MX-5 is powered by a mostly stock Ford 5.0 V8. Before its engine swap, the little roadster had just 36,000 miles on the clock. An additional 6,000 were added after the switcheroo. It also has a host of additional mods including custom dual exhaust, upgraded five-speed manual and brakes, roll bars, and plenty of other bits taken from a Monster Miata kit. It’s also got that custom front bumper and hood scoop. The seller is asking just $11k on Craigslist. For that price you’ll be hard pressed to find anything else with a similar power to weight ratio. Unless, of course, you build your own Monster Miata.
