Honda gave it a shot with a Civic Tourer, which is not a hybrid or an electric vehicle.
Well, this goesagainst everything that has happened in the automotive industry over the pastfew years. Honda just completed a journey through 24 European countries and8,387 miles, which took over 25 days and set a new Guinness World Record for lowestfuel consumption. Over the trip, two Honda R&D engineers managed to averagean astonishing 100.31 mpg in a Honda Civic Tourer 1.6 i-DTEC. The colleagues averaged380 miles a day, which works out to an average speed of approximately 51 mph.
The Civic Tourerfeatures a 1.6-liter turbocharged inline-four that sucks down diesel, which produces118 hp and 221 lb-ft of torque. The diesel-powered wagon only comes with a six-speedmanual transmission and was projected to achieve 73.4 mpg, 25-percent lowerthan what the vehicle actually achieved. With Honda completing the arduousjourney in a capable diesel one question comes to our mind: are hybrids and electric vehicles really better than what we currently drive?
