Introduced in 2004, the Mercedes-Benz CLS-Class is credited with creating the niche "four-door coupe" segment that has since grown to accommodate rivals from Audi and BMW. However, Stuttgart is moving on, and the CLS will be discontinued in the coming months, reports Australia's Drive.

UPDATE 05/09: This article has been updated with comment from Mercedes-Benz USA.

The CLS will reportedly bow out in August. Mercedes will do so to increase production and meet demand for the new E-Class sedan, which debuted a few weeks ago. The CLS was a drastic departure for the traditional brand and wowed people with its avant-garde design and sleek profile. Rumor has it that the CLS was created by a designer who wanted to see what a Jaguar would look like if it were a Mercedes.

With pillarless windows, a four-seat interior layout (for the first generation, at least), and svelte styling, it became a unique choice for those who wanted a luxury sedan that challenged design norms.

American Mercedes representatives have confirmed the news, with a statement to CarBuzz reading:

"In consideration of the global growth potential, and as part of our strategic product portfolio planning, we have decided to end the lifecycle of the CLS on August 31, 2023 with the changeover of the E-Class to the 214 model series.

In our opinion, our current product portfolio addresses emotionally appealing design more than ever. In this respect, models such as the EQE and EQS with their coupe-like lines offer attractive alternatives both in terms of design and price segment. Furthermore, the 4-door AMG GT will continue to be part of the model range as a 4-door coupe.

A new generation of coupes and convertibles will expand our model portfolio in the core segment with a highly attractive lineup."

Of course, this was to be expected. As Mercedes-Benz transitions into all-electric vehicles, the German automaker is streamlining its existing lineup, and the CLS is one of the models that is being let go.

Initial reports suggested the CLS would be killed off in 2024. Those who desire a four-door Mercedes coupe will be disappointed to know the AMG GT 4-Door will also be discontinued in 2024 or 2025. The sporting AMG recently received a subtle facelift, with the six-cylinder models getting a styling update and more equipment.

The CLA-Class is the only four-door coupe expected to survive the electric revolution, but the more compact vehicle won't appeal to high-end luxury buyers. At least the automaker will retain the body style it is credited with creating.

Aside from the CLS, Mercedes will also cull the so-called "coupe SUV" body style. The latest GLC Coupe will be the last of its kind. Interestingly, Mercedes hasn't given up on traditional coupes and will soon introduce the CLE (a C-Coupe and E-Coupe replacement) along with the all-new AMG GT sports car.
