Jaguar Celebrates As Women Can Now Legally Drive In Saudi Arabia

Nothing like taking an F-Type for a hot lap around the track to celebrate.

Saudi Arabia has finally lifted the ban on women drivers. Better late than never, right? To mark the big occasion, Saudi national and professional racing driver Aseel Al Hamad has taken a much deserved victory lap in a Jaguar F-Type. Along with Jaguar, Aseel wants today, June 24, to become World Driving Day, a day the entire world can now celebrate the thrill of being behind the wheel. Saudi Arabia was previously the only country in the world that still didn’t allow women to drive.

Jaguar is also inviting people on this first World Driving Day to share a memory of their best driving moment using the #WorldDrivingDay on social media. Aseel also happens to be the first female board member of the Saudi Arabian Motor Federation. Up until today, sadly, she has never been able to drive a car on a track in her home country.

“Having loved cars since I was a child, today is highly emotional for me. This is the best driving moment of my life. What better way to kick off World Driving Day than a lap of honor in my home country in a Jaguar F-Type – the ultimate car to roar around the track. I hope people around the world will share in our joy today by sharing their most memorable driving story using #worlddrivingday.” Jaguar is obviously quite thrilled to be on hand with Aseel on this momentous day, with spokesperson Fiona Pargeter stating that “It’s easy to forget and take for granted the enjoyment of driving and just what a privilege it is to get behind the wheel of a car.

“World Driving Day is a commitment from Jaguar to celebrate this key moment annually for both men and women. This year, we're really excited to collaborate with the brilliant students from Saudi Arabia to shape the future of mobility for people around the world.” Obviously this wasn’t Aseel’s first time at the track. In fact, she’s driven all over the world – except in her home country. That ban is now a thing of the past.
