Has a 150-year-old problem just been solved?
No one likes getting stuck at a red traffic light but it is a part of the realities of driving. Or is it? Jaguar Land Rover has announced it is giving a trial run to a new technology called the Green Light Optimal Speed Advisory (GLOSA) which can reportedly tell the driver the necessary speed to drive in order to avoid getting stuck at red lights. The automaker used Vehicle-to-Infrastructure (V2X) technology to connect cars to traffic lights in order for the new system to work.
The GLOSA system enables cars to “talk” to traffic lights. Based on factors such as speed and general traffic and road conditions, the driver will be told what speed they should drive as they approach traffic lights and junctions.
JLR believes technology such as this can improve road safety because it’ll prevent (in theory) drivers from racing (and often failing) to beat the lights. This tech could even help improve air quality by reducing harsh acceleration or braking as drivers approach lights.
The ultimate goal is to create “free-flowing cities with fewer delays and less commuter stress,” according to the press release. At the moment, the system is being tested in a Jaguar F-Pace as part of a 20 million GBP ($25.7 million) research project.
“This cutting-edge technology will radically reduce the time we waste at traffic lights, said Oriol Quintana-Morales, JLR’s Connected Technology Research Engineer. “It has the potential to revolutionize driving by creating safe, free-flowing cities that take the stress out of commuting. Our research is motivated by the chance to make future journeys as comfortable and stress-free as possible for all our customers.”
GLOSA is also being tested alongside several other advanced driver assistance features with the main aim to reduce commute time. JLR also notes that the world’s first traffic lights were installed exactly 150 years ago outside the House of Parliament in London. Perhaps it’s time to greatly reduce a lot of the frustration when getting stuck behind one of them.
