JCW Mini Cooper Gets GP Looks With New Pack

Design / Comments

If you missed out on the JCW GP, this is the next best thing.

If you like your small, expensive, British hatchbacks to be fast and fun, you've likely heard of the astonishing 2021 Mini Cooper John Cooper Works GP. Its asking price is almost as scary as the length of its name, but it's one of the most extreme and most exciting small hot hatches you can buy today. Not even a Golf GTI handles as this thing does.

However, you had to own one of the previous GP models to get first dibs on ordering the crazy new model. So, what if you missed out? A new styling package could help ease the pain of being left out, even if performance isn't enhanced.

Mini has announced something that may rile owners of the exclusive GP. See, only 3,000 units are being produced and the lucky individual who got number 0001 had to prove his loyalty to the brand to get the opportunity. Hence, it may be frustrating if, after all that brand loyalty and work, you finally got your hands on a limited-edition GP only for someone with a regular Mini Cooper JCW to pull up next to you in a fairly similar model. Nevertheless, that's what Mini is now offering, capitalizing on the fervor that the special edition has created while still keeping the GP as a somewhat limited and exclusive model. So what's in the appearance package?

As you can see from the comparison photos, the appearance package doesn't add semi-slick tires, carbon fiber fender spats, all of the red accents, or the massive rear wing. But it does get GP wheel center caps, Racing Grey metallic body paint, Melting Silver metallic roof paint, a special spoiler and mirrors, and some gloss black accents.

Inside, the upholstery gets the GP moniker too, while a new steering wheel finished in Walknappa Leather is joined by red contrast stitching and special 3D-printed shift paddles. Still, as extensive as the changes are, no additional performance is extracted from the existing powerplant. At least the new appearance package doesn't make the JCW an exact replica of the coveted GP.
