Jeep Cherokee Owners Told To "Park Outside" Due To Fire Risk

Recall / 7 Comments

The company will start sending recall notifications to owners on June 30.

Stellantis has announced a recall report for 132,099 Jeep Cherokee units produced between 2013 and 2015 over a powered liftgate issue. According to the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the issue poses a fire risk, which could result in injuring people even outside the compact crossover, as well as in property damage.

That said, the Michigan-based automaker advises owners to park their affected vehicles outside until the final repair has been completed. The company will start sending notification letters to owners on June 30, 2023.

According to NHTSA's Safety Report Recall document, the powered liftgate module could cause the vehicle to catch fire due to an electrical short. There is a spot where water could enter the module, potentially leading to a vehicle fire, regardless of whether the ignition is on or off.

Of note, the automaker recalled 55,687 Jeep Cherokee units for the same technical problem back in 2015. The automaker reworked the module then to become more robust to water intrusion. Now that the issue is recurring, Chrysler said that it is working on a remedy but has not given a definite timeline. It's unclear, however, if the units included in the latest powered liftgate recall are the same ones that were fixed before.

It was on January 5, 2022 when Chrysler opened an investigation following an increasing number of cargo compartment fire reports in 2014-2015 Cherokees. By April 27, 2023, the automaker identified 50 customer assistance records, 23 warranty claims, and 21 field reports potentially related to the problem. Fortunately, the company is not aware of any accidents or injuries potentially related to this issue.

Jeep Cherokee owners who paid for repairs related to the matter out of pocket can submit proof of payment for reimbursement. They can also visit the NHTSA website or call NHTSA's Vehicle Safety Hotline at 888-327-4236 and enter their vehicle identification number to check if their vehicle is part of the recall.
