Along with Ram, Jeep is FCA's cash cow. Sales of every Jeep model, from the Renegade to the Grand Cherokee, are excellent. Wrangler and Wrangler Unlimited sales are better than ever and the arrival of the Gladiator is bringing even more customers to the brand. And now, a new report from Auto Express is claiming Jeep will soon expand its lineup again – beyond the confirmed upcoming three-row Grand Wagoneer. Jeep's head of European marketing, Marco Pigozzi, told the publication a new "ultra-compact" utility vehicle is planned for 2022. It will be slotted below the Renegade, or about the size of the overseas-only Suzuki Jimny.

But here's the kicker: it could feature an all-electric powertrain, derived from FCA's planned merger with PSA. "The car will be able to be used as a bad-ass Jeep, but it has also been designed to be used every day," Pigozzi said.

He further admitted the unnamed SUV will be slightly longer than the Jimny but shorter than the also overseas-only new 2020 Nissan Juke. If Jeep decides not to make the SUV all-electric, chances are, at the very least, it'll sport a hybrid powertrain. Now, the big question is this: will this new SUV will be sold in the US?

Hard to say at the moment because this new Jeep could ride on a platform currently used by Peugeot and Citroen, both not sold in the US. Therefore, this platform, currently underpinning the Peugeot 208, Opel Corsa, and Citroen DS3 Sportback, has likely not been homologated for this market.

Given that neither the Jimny nor Juke are sold here, it'd make a lot of sense for this Jeep to be overseas-only as well. We've reached out to FCA North America seeking comment and we'll update this space if we receive a relevant response.

The fact that Jeep wants a smaller, potentially all-electric model is not surprising given its announcement a few days ago about plans to electrify its SUVs as part of a plan to expand the brand worldwide. In short, it wants to become "the greenest SUV brand in the world." The introduction of an electrified Suzuki Jimny/Nissan Juke competitor is definitely a smart move.
