Both electrified SUVs offer a fully electric range of 31 miles.
Before the Jeep Wrangler gets the plug-in hybrid treatment, Jeep has unveiled new plug-in hybrid versions of the Jeep Renegade and Compass compact SUVs. Like every future plug-in hybrid Jeep, the electrified Renegade and Compass are badged as 4xe models to signify the brand's new electrified era.
Both the Jeep Renegade 4xe and Compass 4xe are powered by a 1.3-liter turbo gasoline engine paired with two electric motors, with one on the rear axle and another at the front coupled to the internal combustion engine that acts as a regenerative braking system. Powering the motors is an 11.4 kWh battery located underneath the second-row seats, allowing for a cargo capacity of 11.6 cu.ft for the Renegade and 14.8 cu.ft for the Compass with the seats upright, which is almost as much space as the conventionally-powered variants.
Standalone, the 1.3-liter turbo engine produces either 130 hp or 180 hp. Combined with the 60-hp electric motor, the Limited trim delivers a total output of 190 hp, while the Trailhawk and S trims generate 240 hp. As for torque, the electric motor produces 184 lb-ft of torque, while the combustion engine delivers 199 lb-ft for a total of 383 lb-ft.
This setup enables the electrified Jeep Rengade and Compass to accelerate from 0-62 mph in around 7.5 seconds and reach a top speed of 80 mph in fully electric mode and up to 124 mph in hybrid mode. Power is sent to all four wheels through a six-speed automatic gearbox. In pure electric mode, the Jeep Renegade 4xe and Compass 4xe can travel up to 31 miles.
According to Jeep, the Renegade 4xe and Compass 4xe are even more off-road capable than their conventional siblings since combining the gasoline engine with the electric motor results in more torque. The off-road-focused 240-hp Trailhawk 4xe trim, for example, boasts 50 percent more torque than the 170-hp diesel-powered Trailhawk model.
Traction to the rear axle is also provided by an electric motor instead of a prop shaft, allowing the two axles to be separated and control the torque independently more effectively. Selectable terrain modes include Auto, Sport, Snow, Sand/Mud, and Rock.
Visually, the Renegade 4xe and Compass 4xe are distinguished by blue highlights on the front and rear badges. Subtle blue accents also adorn the side badges.
18 different exterior colors are available for the Renegade 4xe, while the Compass 4xe is offered with a choice of 22 exterior finishes. Six specific wheels are available for the Renegade 4xe and seven for the Compass 4xe. Inside the high-tech cabin, a seven-inch color display and an 8.4-inch touchscreen with navigation, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and Radio DAB support come as standard equipment.
Orders for the Renegade 4xe and Compass 4xe start this month in Europe, but US availability hasn't been announced yet. Since a teaser video was released last week, it shouldn't be long until the Jeep Wrangler 4xe plug-in hybrid joins Jeep's electrified lineup. By 2022, Jeep will offer an electrified version of every current model.
