We often take the technologies in new cars for granted, and that includes how far interior/exterior lighting has come over the last two decades or so. But beyond the functional advances of technologies like laser lights and cornering headlamps, it's also about outshining the competition and putting on the most dazzling visual display. The dramatic welcome lighting of the new Jeep Grand Wagoneer Concept is a case in point.

Shared in an Instagram video by Ralph Gilles, the head of design at Fiat Chrysler Automobiles, the Wagoneer's lighting show is a party trick that new customers could have plenty of fun with when showing off the SUV to friends and family.

The lighting display begins with the Wagoneer lettering on the grille, which illuminates first, gradually followed by the grille's vertical bars, the headlights, the lower LED DRLs, and even the mirrors. Suddenly, the illuminated grille available on some new BMWs seems a lot less over-the-top than it once did.

Fully lit up, the Jeep's lighting looks great and adds even more presence to the Wagoneer's face. That's if the welcome lighting makes it to production, though, as the display seen here was on a concept version of the Grand Wagoneer.

One pessimistic commenter did point out that the extra lights mean that there is a greater chance of one part or letter failing, which could see you awkwardly pulling up in a Jeep Agoneer.

Anyway, with the production version of the Grand Wagoneer expected in showrooms next year, we'll see how much of the concept's design carries over. We certainly hope that the gorgeous interior doesn't differ from the concept too much with its array of screens and plush materials. A plug-in hybrid powertrain motivates the Grand Wagoneer Concept, although we don't yet know much about its specs. When it arrives, the three-row Grand Wagoneer will go up against the Cadillac Escalade and Lincoln Navigator.
