NASCAR superstar donates special 'Vette for charity auction.
Chevy's made some pretty sick Corvettes over the years. But when it comes to outright pace, nothing comes close to the C7.R – the racing version built to compete in the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship and the 24 Hours of Le Mans. Unfortunately, you can't buy one, much less actually drive it on the street. But this comes close, and as a special kicker, this particular example is studded with star power.
Coming up for auction in Scottsdale, Arizona, this month is a special 2016 Chevrolet Corvette C7.R Edition donated by no less celebrated a racing driver than Jeff Gordon.
If that name doesn't mean anything to you, you've probably never been to a NASCAR race, or even watched one on television. In 23 seasons in the top stock-car racing series, Jeff Gordon won 23 Cup championships, 93 races, and took 81 poles – all driving for... you guessed it: Chevrolet. He won the Daytona 500 three times, and the the 24 Hours of Daytona with Cadillac in 2017. We could go on and on, but we think you get the point.
Suffice it to say, when the Bowtie brand rolled out the C7.R edition Corvette, Gordon was a natural recipient.
Inspired by the endurance racer, the C7.R edition was based on the Z06, with its 6.2-liter supercharged V8 kicking out 650 horsepower through an eight-speed automatic transmission. Though principally an appearance package, the C7.R edition was based on the top 3LZ trim, and came with the Z07 performance package.
Only 500 examples were made, and Gordon drove his just 747 miles. Now he's donated it to be auctioned off by Barrett-Jackson, with proceeds to benefit the Jeff Gordon Children's Foundation – which only makes the prospect of taking it home on January 18 that much more tempting.
