KAMM's Porsche 912c Is A $391,000 Work Of Automotive Art

The little-known 912 gains carbon fiber body parts, a tuned engine, and improved handling.

KAMM Manufaktur, the Budapest-based Porsche restomod specialist, has been working its magic on the 912 for a few years already, and now, KAMM has revealed the production-ready 912c, which arrives with several performance revisions. This follows the prototype 912c revealed last year.

The 2.0-liter air-cooled engine now produces 187 horsepower and 168 lb-ft of torque, which is slightly higher than the original 170 horses. The motor, which revs up to 7,200 rpm, has been upgraded with a new case, heads, and connecting rods. The carburetors have made way for more sophisticated electronic fuel injection and throttle bodies, which provide superior performance on the road and track.

The tuning company has also fitted a custom stainless steel exhaust system. Aside from the engine and performance upgrades, KAMM added TracTive-based semi-active coilover suspension to the production specification. The five-state adjustable suspension has been pre-tuned by company engineers and is said to offer a great balance between track and road use.

KAMM hasn't stopped there, though. Behind the stylish five-spoke alloys, you'll find APC brakes that not only perform better but also reduce unsprung weight. The steering rack gearing has been recalibrated, too, and now requires 2.5 turns from lock to lock, as opposed to 1.7 on the prototype. Finally, the gear ratios have been fettled with to create a more relaxed driving experience at high speeds.

The firm offers a number of options, including center-locking wheels, a track-tuned engine, or a full carbon fiber body; the standard vehicle makes use of a semi-carbon fiber body.

There is no shortage of resto-modded Porsches to choose from. Companies such as Singer and Theon build some extraordinary masterpieces that, visually, at least, leave this 912 for dead. But this car is all about driving pleasure, says KAMM. Weighing in at just 1,653 pounds, it should be a joy to throw around corners.

The 912c utilizes a five-speed manual transmission (with a dog-leg pattern). If you plan on using your classic Porsche on the track, KAMM also offers an optional close-ratio setup for motorsport use. The rest of the package includes a ZF-sourced limited-slip differential and a Porsche racing clutch.

Before KAMM touches any 912, the company treats every vehicle to a restoration. Steel components are replaced with carbon fiber, along with several other bespoke parts. Despite these modern updates, one would never say the vehicle is sporting these upgrades - and that's exactly what the company wants. "The 912c looks and feels period correct with modern touches adding unseen improvements and enhancements," says the company.

Customers can choose from three wheel designs: heritage Fuchs, three-piece "917" style, and steel-look alloys. All are 15 inches in size. KAMM offers regular road tires or sticky Yokohama semi-slick rubber. The standard glass has been replaced with Lexan polycarbonate windows.

Each and every customer meets with company founder Miklos Kazmer for a consultation, where clients can choose from countless paint finishes and unique interior designs. Speaking of the cabin, the seats, interior trim, and gear lever are finished in carbon fiber.

KAMM has fitted the 912c with lightweight carpets. Other neat touches include the AP Racing pedal box and the electronic air conditioning. "I am delighted to present the production specification KAMM 912c to the world," said Kazmer. "To receive such high praise for our prototype was a proud moment for us, and we feel confident the production specification will be equally well received."

As for price, KAMM says the 912c starts at €360,000 (approximately $391,500) with a donor car and €320,000 (approximately $348,000) if you use your own 912. If you're interested, you had better act quickly - just two build slots are left for 2023.

If you're wondering what the 912 is, Porsche marketed this as the entry-level version of the 911. While the two cars look identical, the 912 makes use of a four-cylinder engine.
