Block will use this vintage Cossie to tackle three U.S. rally stages this year.
Last year, Ken Block revealed his latest work-in-progress Hoonigan car project: a 1991 Ford Escort Cosworth Group A rally car. We’ve seen him torture the tires of the vintage rally monster in a series of videos, but now Block has unveiled the finished competition car in all its glory. Block may have retired from racing in the World WX full-time last year, but he isn’t quitting rallying entirely. This year, the rally star will be putting the Group A racecar through its paces in three U.S. rally stages, starting with the woods of Oregon Trail Rally on April 20–22.
He'll then tackle the New England Forest Rally on July 20–21 and the Idaho Rally International on September 15. Block will also compete in his first WRC stage since 2014 in Spain, driving a 2017 Ford Fiesta RS WRC prepared by M-Sport on October 25–28. “It takes a huge amount of effort and training to race in the WRC,” said Block.
“But I’ll be cramming that into a short period of testing beforehand. It’s not really enough time in the car to properly prepare for a WRC attack, but I’ll take what I can get!" The car we’re most interested in is Block’s custom Cossie. It was originally built as a homologation special enabling it to compete in the grueling Group A category in the WRC during the 1990s. Under its hood lurks a 2.0-liter turbo four paired to a five-speed manual that originally sent 227 horsepower to all four wheels. Block’s car has been modified with an upgraded, turbocharged WRC engine producing 400 horsepower and 405 lb-ft of torque.
It wears a custom livery designed by Death Spray Custom and rides on wheels designed to replicate those from the original production Escort Cosworth. We're interested to see how the vintage Cossie fares against modern competition. Block’s Escort Cosworth will also feature in Gymkhana Ten later this year, which promises to be biggest and best yet with five cars and five locations.
