The "other" Korean automaker is aiming to take on Europe's hot hatches with GT versions of the Cee'd and Pro_cee'd hatchbacks.
A couple of weeks ago we brought you reports that Kia was preparing to launch its first hot hatch, and a couple of days later the Korean automaker revealed the first teaser sketch of the Pro_cee'd GT that's in the pipeline. Now Kia has released the first details of what it has in store. Set to be built in Zilina, Slovakia, and go on sale in Europe sometime in the middle of next year, the Cee'd GT will be offered in both three-door Pro_cee'd and five-door Cee'd body-styles.
Power will come from a 1.6-liter direct-injection four with a twin-scroll turbocharger and other upgraded mechanicals to deliver 201 horsepower and 195 lb-ft of torque, representing a 51 and 61 percent boost in output over the naturally-aspirated engine. With a six-speed manual, the hot hatch is targeting a 7.9-second 0-62 time. Kia is also upgrading the suspension to cope with the added power, with 18-inch alloys packing bigger brakes with red calipers. A new grille, bumpers, lamps, paint finishes and an interior Recaro bucket seats and aluminum pedals will also distinguish the GT from your average, run-of-the-mill Cee'd hatches.
