Kia Finally Confirms The Name Of Its New SUV

Teaser / 14 Comments

Wait until you find out the inspiration behind it.

After showing some sketches of the exterior and interior a few weeks ago, Kia has released the first official photo teasing its upcoming compact SUV. The Korean manufacturer has also officially confirmed it will be called the Seltos. Of course, this doesn't come as a surprise thanks to last week's leaked photos that showed the SUV completely undisguised, but at least we now have confirmation it will be called the Seltos in all markets. Due to launch this summer, Kia says the Seltos will "bring sophistication and assertiveness to the compact SUV segment."

As for the name, the Kia Seltos is inspired by Greek mythology and the legend of 'Celtos', the son of Hercules, with the 'S' added to the name implying speed and sportiness according to Kia. The Seltos is aimed at millennials and is set apart from its rivals thanks to a "combination of sophisticated, sporty design and the space and capabilities of a traditional SUV."

Kia isn't ready to lift the covers off the Seltos just yet as the teaser image only shows a close-up of the chrome-plated badge, but thanks to leaked photos we already know what it will look like. From the photos, Kia's new compact SUV will be heavily inspired by the SP Concept, adopting a long hood and sharp design lines that give it a surprisingly sporty look.

We still haven't seen the interior, but Kia says the cabin is "characterized by broad, sweeping shapes and highly technical details" and is equipped with a range of technologies including a 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment system and Sound Mood Lighting.

No technical details have been revealed yet, but the Seltos is expected to ride on the same platform as the Kia Soul. This means we can likely expect a range of powertrain options, including a 2.0-liter inline-four and a 1.6-liter turbocharged inline-four. In the Soul, the former delivers 147 horsepower and 132 lb-ft of torque and the latter produces 201 horsepower and 195 lb-ft of torque. Look out for the full reveal of the Kia Seltos later this month before sales kick off in the second half of 2019. Some sources are claiming the Seltos will premiere in India on June 20, but this hasn't been officially confirmed by Kia yet.
