Kia Takes Yet Another Step Toward EV Domination

Electric Vehicles / 2 Comments

From 2025, purpose-built vehicles will spew out of Kia's new facility with the intention of ruling the commercial EV roost.

Kia is leaving nothing to chance when it comes to the fast-approaching electric era. Already, the brand offers two talented EVs stateside, in the form of the EV6, the newly-introduced Niro EV, and, in the next few years, the EV9. The company aims to lead the EV field and has promised the arrival of several new models by 2027, comprising passenger vehicles and purpose-built vehicles (PBVs).

The carmaker recently unveiled one of its PBVs. Essentially a rehashed version of the outgoing Niro EV, the Niro Plus will be sold in Kia's home country as an emissions-free taxi or general use vehicle. The arrival of this commercial vehicle is only the beginning, with the company announcing it will establish a brand new, smart manufacturing plant solely for the production of electric PBVs.

The facility will be housed within Kia's existing Hwaseong site, with construction of the new plant expected to kick off in the first half of 2023. PBV production will follow shortly thereafter, in the second half of 2025. Initially, the company is aiming to build 100,000 PBVs a year, with intentions to increase this to 150,000 units annually.

With the environment at the front of Kia's mind, the plant is expected to be eco-friendly. Clean painting and energy-saving facilities will help the company reduce its carbon footprint, along with state-of-the-art manufacturing processes and energy-efficient technology. Aside from Ford and Mercedes-Benz, not many other carmakers have taken the plunge into the world of electric commercial vehicles. Kia hopes to lead the segment by 2030.

"This dedicated PBV facility is one of the major pillars of our Plan S strategy as Kia seeks to claim the top position in the global PBV market ... we will initially explore new markets with derivative PBV models, then gradually expand our presence in global markets with dedicated PBV models featuring autonomous driving technologies," said Kia's President and CEO, Ho Sung Song.

When production kicks off, the Korean automaker will press its first-ever dedicated PBV into production. For now, all the company has said is the mid-sized model (codenamed SW) will utilize Kia's 'eS' skateboard platform - which was developed exclusively for PBVs - and be followed by an onslaught of commercial vehicles all adopting the same platform.

There will be something for everyone; from fresh food haulers, micro-sized PBVs, and even large vehicles that can be used as mobile shops or offices, Kia is leaving no stone unturned.
