The 2021 F1 season gets underway this weekend.
This weekend, the 2021 Formula 1 World Championship gets underway on the Bahrain International Circuit in Sakhir. As part of the build-up, we've already seen Aston Martin unveil its stunning Vantage Safety Car, while Mercedes-AMG gave its own F1 Safety Car a snazzy new look. Alfa Romeo, which will be competing with its C41 car unveiled earlier this year, has now gotten in on the action by taking to the track. Alongside the C41, the Italian automaker captured its F1 drivers - Kimi Raikkonen and Antonio Giovinazzi - alongside the brand's wildest road-going car, the Giulia GTA.
Revealed just over a year ago, the development of the GTA and even more hardcore GTAm owes much to Alfa's partnership with Sauber Engineering, specifically in the creation of the sedan's various carbon fiber components. To highlight the links between the F1 team and the GTA twins, each driver's race suit will show off these acronyms; Raikkonen will wear the 'GTA' suit and Giovinazzi will don the 'GTAm' suit. Last year, the two drivers got behind the wheel of the Giulia GTA, which has a tuned 2.9-liter twin-turbo V6 developing 540 horsepower, widened front and rear tracks, and a lighter body thanks to the strategic use of carbon fiber body panels.
Alfa Romeo has a long and colorful Formula 1 history. Biscione, the name by which Alfa is referred to in Italy, emerged victorious at the very first F1 Grand Prix ever. The year was 1950 and the location was Silverstone, with the winning car being an Alfa Romeo Gran Premio Tip 158 'Alfetta'. The C41 will be looking to replicate this achievement in Sakhir this weekend. While there has been no confirmation that the GTA and GTAm will make it to North America, most of us wouldn't have been able to afford the sky-high price anyway. At least we get to admire what is possibly the most gorgeous sedan on the planet from a distance.
