Lamborghini Aventador SVJ Recalled To Fix Serious Issue

Supercars / Comments

A manufacturer recall has been issued for 221 Lamborghini Aventador SVJ Coupes.

When you splash out over half a million dollars on an exotic supercar like the Lamborghini Aventador SVJ, you expect it to be built with impeccable quality standards - but supercars can still be prone to problems that weren't detected during production.

In the past, Lamborghini has issued recalls to fix problems ranging from wheels detaching from the Aventador SV to warning lights failing in the Gallardo. Now, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has issued a recall for the Aventador SVJ because the engine hood cover could fly open and detach while driving.

The problem affects 221 examples of the 2018-2021 Lamborghini Aventador SVJ Coupe built between July 4, 2018, and January 15, 2021. This recall has an estimated 100% defect rate, so if you bought an Aventador SVJ in the last few years, you'll need to arrange an appointment with your local dealer to get it fixed.

According to the NHTSA's report, heat can cause plastic on the hood hinge to deform over time. This affects the torque in the retaining screws and could cause the engine hood to flip open and, in a worst-case scenario, fully detach, which could create a road hazard.

The Aventador SVJ Roadster is unaffected by the recall, however. Models built after January 15 this year were also fixed at the factory before being delivered. Lamborghini became aware of this fault in January after it was reported by a dealer in France. Luckily, no accidents or injuries relating to this defect have been reported.

All owners of affected Aventador SVJ models will be contacted by Lamborghini to arrange an appointment with an authorized dealer to replace the hood hinge screws free of charge. To prevent this from happening again, Lamborghini has added a thread-locker to the screws that prevent the bolts from unscrewing over time. This isn't the first time the track-focused supercar has been recalled, either. Last year, the Aventador SVJ was recalled after a fault was discovered that could cause the suspension could collapse.
