Lamborghini's 50th anniversary present to itself is about as extreme and driver-centric as it gets.
Yesterday's reveal of the Lamborghini Egoista Concept certainly sparked plenty of opinions from naysayers and fans alike. Today will likely be no different as Lamborghini has released more photos and specs of its latest insane driving machine. Taking its name from the Italian word for "selfish" due to its single-seat cockpit, the Egoista adopts Lamborghini design traits, but looks like the result of a Veneno and KTM X-Bow mating while on LSD – with some of Batman's Tumbler thrown in for good measure.
Lamborghini says the cockpit's design was inspired by that of an Apache attack helicopter, and comes complete with a four-point racing harness, airbags and head-up display. In place of the familiar scissor doors, there's a jet-style canopy and the driver needs to remove the steering wheel in order to exit (like in a formula racing car). The eccentrically-styled but aerodynamic shape is constructed from aluminum and carbon fiber, and stands as perhaps the ultimate expression of Lamborghini design to date. It's muscular and angular throughout, with a front end inspired by a pair of lowered bull's horns ready to charge their target.
Power comes from the Gallardo's 5.2-liter V10 tuned up to 600 horsepower and mounted in a form summed up by its chief designer thusly: "It's as if Ferruccio Lamborghini were saying: I'm going to put the engine in the back, I don't want a passenger. I want it for myself, and I want it as I imagine it to be."
