Lamborghini has confirmed the Urus SUV concept has been green lit and is slated to begin production in 2017.
From the moment it debuted back in 2012 at the Beijing Auto Show, the Lamborghini Urus SUV concept was something many enthusiasts wanted to see get the production green light. It looked fantastic inside and out and was powered by a turbocharged 4.0-liter V8 that produced 584 horsepower. Was the Urus quite as bonkers as the old Eighties favorite "Lambo Rambo"? That's all a matter of opinion, but it certainly makes the current Porsche Cayenne look downright boring by comparison.
Despite all of the (mostly) positive reaction, Lamborghini refused to confirm whether it would build the Urus, as the Italian automaker was still trying to make a business case for it. Fortunately, the suits at VW Group realized that a production version will be a money-maker and have given the go-ahead for production. It's now officially been confirmed by Audi boss Rupert Stadler at the Grande Giro 50th anniversary tour of Lamborghini that the Urus will begin production sometime in 2017. No additional details are known just yet but they'll likely begin to come out in the months ahead.
