If you want one, you’ll need to sign up for a $250k space flight.
Jaguar Land Rover’s Special Vehicle Operations division has created some incredible special edition off-roaders, such as the Defender Works V8, but this is one of the most bizarre. What you’re looking at here is a special edition Range Rover Autobiography created exclusively for astronauts.
Specifically, the Range Rover Astronaut Edition, as Land Rover calls it, is only available to customers who have signed up to fly into space with Virgin Galactic. It’s part of an ongoing collaboration between Land Rover and Virgin Galactic, which aims to offer commercial space flights using its SpaceShipTwo vehicle. Around 600 people have signed up as 'Future Astronauts' by reserving a flight.
Based on the luxurious SVO-developed Range Rover Autobiography, the Astronaut Edition is distinguished by its unique Zero Gravity Blue paint finish "inspired by the depth and intensity of the night sky.” A bespoke puddle lamp illumination design features the silhouette of Virgin Galactic’s SpaceShipTwo, while unique Astronaut Edition badging features on the tailgate and side profile finishers.
Inside, the Astronaut Edition features a crafted piece of the spaceship’s front landing skid that flew on Virgin Spaceship Unity’s first space flight in December 2018. Part of that skid has been used to form two discs within the cup holders. One of these features a quote from Virgin boss Richard Branson, while the other shows details of the space flight. Once a buyer has flown into space on a Virgin Galactic flight, this will be swapped with part of the wooden skid from the craft they flew in.
Other bespoke details include a ‘DNA of Flight’ graphic on the carbon fiber center console lid and debossed onto the leather rear armrest. The aluminum door handles are also engraved with Virgin Galactic’s own Future Astronaut community constellation pattern. This design also features on the rear of the front headrests and metal letterbox panel design above the glovebox. Additional personalization options include stitching the customer's initials onto the headrests.
The Range Rover Astronaut Edition will be offered with either Land Rover’s 398-hp, p400e plug-in hybrid engine or a 518-hp, 5.5-liter V8 supercharged gasoline engine. Pricing details haven’t been revealed, but the Range Rover Autobiography starts at $143,000 in the US.
