The shooting brake, which combines elements of a station wagon and coupe body design, has enjoyed a resurgence in popularity in recent years, after falling out of fashion after the late 60s and early 70s. With automakers such as Genesis teasing a version of the G70 in sporting brake style and oddball cars such as the Porsche Boxster wagon, we can honestly say that we are living in a new golden age of oddly-shaped station wagons.
Thanks to some very tasty leaked images of the locally known 'CC,' we can see just how different the shooting brake design of the Arteon is from the ordinary fastback model. Besides the obviously styling change to the rear end of the car, we can also observe a more pronounced front lip spoiler finished off in chrome. The spy shots also hint at a more rugged style, in line with the Audi A4 Allroad.
We can see that there's a set of anti-friction guards at the front lip, as well as beefed-up wheel arches, side skirts, and rear bumper. The ground clearance has also been increased by a noticeable margin.
Styling in the rear includes the same taillights as the fastback, but there's a different set of exhaust surrounds in play which is embedded with a chrome strip that runs the length of the lower bumper. According to Autohome, the shooting brake is as wide and tall as the sedan version, and shares the same wheelbase, but grows in length from 191.5 inches to 191.7 inches.
The Chinese version will continue to make use of a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-pot engine which produces either 186 hp or 220 hp depending on the trim level. The 4MOTION all-wheel-drive system is also suspected to make an appearance. Unfortunately, the Arteon Shooting Brake will only be sold in Europe and China. However, the equally gorgeous sedan will go on sale in the US.
