For the first time in the model's history, the Ford F-150 is going electric. A plug-in hybrid version of the popular pickup is expected to launch this year, followed by a fully electric version in 2021. But this isn't the only pickup Ford is planning to electrify, as Ford is investing $11.5 billion into electric technology, allowing the Blue Oval automaker to launch 16 battery-electric and 24 hybrid models worldwide by 2022.

Australia's Car Expect has obtained leaked engine details about the next-generation 2022 Ford Ranger, confirming that the mid-size pickup will get the plug-in hybrid treatment. In the US, the Ford Ranger is offered with a 2.3-liter turbo inline-4 gasoline unit producing 270 horsepower and 310 lb-ft of torque.

Outside of the US, the Ranger uses either a 3.2-liter five-cylinder turbo-diesel or a 2.0-liter EcoBlue diesel. According to the publication, the aging 3.2-liter diesel will be scrapped for the next-generation model. As standard, the new Ranger will come with a 2.0-liter twin-turbocharged four-cylinder diesel good for 210 hp and 368 lb-ft of torque.

A more powerful 3.0-liter six-cylinder turbo-diesel engine will also be available for higher trims producing 250 hp and 440 lb-ft of torque. This is the same V6 diesel unit available in the US-spec Ford F-150 that has an identical output. Completing the 2022 Ford Ranger engine lineup will be a more efficient 2.3-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine with a plug-in hybrid system, although this is unlikely to be available at launch. This system is expected to produce around 360 hp and 500 lb-ft of torque and offer a combined fuel economy of 3.0 liters of fuel per 100km (62 miles).

While Ford already offers PHEV versions of the Explorer and Escape in Europe, this plug-in hybrid engine hasn't been used in any Ford model yet. The Explorer PHEV uses a 3.3-liter turbocharged V6 and an electric motor, while the Escape PHEV uses a smaller 2.5-liter four-cylinder combined with an electric motor.

In addition to these new engine options, other changes will include a new central 12.8-inch vertical screen with the same SYNC4 infotainment system as the Ford Mustang Mach-E with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto support, and a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster. The next-generation Ford Ranger is expected to arrive in late 2022. Since Ford is electrifying the F-150 for the US, there's a good chance the new hybrid Ranger will go on sale in the US.
