Many moons ago in August 2021, Lotus teased four new models. This was a big deal because the niche automaker rarely even brings out one new car, but the British brand is taking its electric renaissance seriously. Along with the combustion-powered Lotus Emira, the carmaker has revealed its first SUV ever, called the Eletre. That was internally codenamed the Type 132 while a four-door coupe to be unveiled next year is codenamed the Type 133. A larger-than-Eletre SUV is coming in 2024 and is being developed under the name Type 134, while the Type 135 is set to be an all-electric sports car. Fortunately, those names will all be changed for others far more emotive and exciting.

First uncovered by a user on the Rivian Owners Forum, Lotus has made trademark applications in China. These were applied for on December 21, which was the same time as the Eletre name was filed. In January and February, various other filings were lodged with the World Intellectual Property Organization, confirming that these names are meant for global use. So what are the names? The first is Etude, which some of our older readers in other markets may recognize as a name that was applied to various Mazda models as early as 1987. No longer in use by the Japanese automaker, it would stand to reason that Mazda has no interest in the name anymore and any trademarks may have expired.

The other name is more exciting: Envya. Yes, spelled exactly like the swimwear store's name, although we doubt either company even cares about the other. The trademark applications do not specifically say what each is for, except to make provision for use in automobiles and numerous other accessories and motoring-associated services. If we had to guess, the Etude would be the new SUV and the Envya would be the new four-door coupe. We expect that the sports car (Type 135) is yet to be given a name as it is the furthest from production. Hopefully, Lotus will have something exciting to announce soon.
