The latest Golf R is massively capable but a bit conservative. Oettinger's new aerodynamic kit should remedy the problem.
Specialist Volkswagen tuner Oettinger has previewed an all-new aerodynamic kit for the Golf R, one of the most powerful hatchbacks money can buy. Unlike its rivals, the potent German tends to err on the side of conservatism, which isn't necessarily a good thing in this boisterous segment.
The firm's new styling accouterments lend it just the right amount of flair and aggression without compromising the sophisticated lines. Up front, the bumper has been reworked extensively and now boasts a more prominent splitter along with black-painted canards. This approximately-$724 addition isn't just for show, as Oettinger claims it reduces lift and aids stability. The company's logo proudly sits on the grille, opposite the 'R' badging.
Moving on to the side of the vehicle, you'll note the jutting side skirts. This provides the Golf with a more aggressive stance, giving the illusion of increased width. These style-enhancing parts are fitted onto the existing components and are also said to provide superior aerodynamics. Yours for the equivalent of $724.
Further presence is afforded by the forged "Double Six" matte gold wheels. Previewed here with blue exterior paint, the Golf R puts us in mind of Subaru WRX STI models, which donned the combination for many years. Silver-painted examples (seen below) are also available. The wheels weigh 17.6 lbs each and command the equivalent of $3,480 for a set of four.
Around back, the changes are subtle yet effective. Two rear wing options are available; Golf R models specified with the R-Performance package can be equipped with an additional wing for $424. Owners who have not specified this option from the factory can elect to fit Oettinger's regular roof spoiler (also available for the GTI) at the same price.
Lastly, there's a new rear diffuser wing for $494, but it's only available for Golf R models not equipped with a towing hitch. Aside from these changes, we can see Oettinger-branded brake calipers. No mention of this has been made yet, so we can expect additional announcements to be made in the coming weeks.
Handling should be improved thanks to the lowered suspension. The tuner makes no mention of this in greater detail, though, so the extent of the changes remains unknown. The engine also seems untouched, and that's no bad thing. The 2.0-liter turbocharged four-pot provides ample performance, with up to 315 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque (280 for the manual) on offer.
As VW celebrates the 20 years of the Golf R, American customers have been treated to a unique model, simply known as the Golf R 20th Anniversary Edition. While power remains the same, several unique touches mark it out as something special. Volkswagen has also done away with the sunroof, which saves weight and, in turn, provides a more exciting experience.
If this doesn't cut it, perhaps Oettinger's kit is for you. If you act before October, the tuner will even throw in a 20% discount for the entire package.
