Land Rover is celebrating 75 years of the brand with Lego and a 2,336-piece Lego Icons Classic Land Rover Defender 90 kit. It's advertised as a "two-in-one format," meaning the model can be built as a road-going version or customized for expeditions. The Series models, which became the Defender, now go back 70 years as a tool for everything from local farming to global exploring to humanitarian aid and work.

The finished model measures 13 inches long, seven inches wide, and seven inches tall, and it's remarkably detailed, particularly the fenders. The kit comes with a roof rack, raised air intake, front bumper with working winch, side rails, and toolbox, plus traction plates for crossing mud and sand.

Although it's not a full-fledged Technics kit, the finished model does have working steering and suspension, with doors and a hood that opens. Even the interior has details those familiar with the Defender will recognize.

"Bringing the Classic Defender to life in bricks was no easy challenge. Defender can take you anywhere, so during the design process we wanted to infuse the set with that sense of adventure," said Kurt Kristiansen, LEGO Design Master. "We can't wait to see the fans' reactions."

We are fans, and our reaction to the photos is that we want to get hold of a kit for ourselves. It looks like one of the best of Lego's current slew of car kits.

The Lego Icons Classic Land Rover Defender 90 set goes on sale July 1, 2023 with a price tag of $239.99. That's expensive for a Lego kit, but it's a big one and will look fantastic on display as well as being fun to build.

"Defender is synonymous with adventure and this new LEGO set is a perfect way to capture the spirit of an incomparable, unstoppable automotive icon, whilst also sharing the playful side of the vehicle," said Paul Barritt, Director of Land Rover Classic.
