Limited Edition Mercedes CLA Star Wars Edition Unveiled For Japan

The force is not so strong with this one.

Despite not being a series associated with cars, automakers can’t resist cashing in on the success of Star Wars. First we had the Nissan Rogue: Rogue One Star Wars Limited Edition, which was the first production vehicle to include Star Wars-branded elements. Now Mercedes has joined the dark side with the reveal of two Star Wars-themed limited edition CLA180 compact sedans. The occasion? It’s May 4th, which, as hardcore fans of the space saga will know, is officially Star Wars day: (May the Fourth Be With You).

This year also happens to be the 40th anniversary of A New Hope, which just about justifies the existence of these limited edition sedans. Available only in Japan, the CLA180 Star Wars Edition is available in either Calcite White or Night Black, limited to just 60 units a piece. The former is supposed to resemble a Stormtrooper, while the latter, if you hadn’t guessed, pays tribute to the Dark Lord of the Sith, Darth Vader. Yes, Mercedes has officially succumbed to the dark side as there’s no Luke Skywalker option. Should you opt for the Darth Vader-inspired Merc, you get imposing black 18-inch multi-spoke alloys, while the white model sits on 18-inch five-split-spoke two-tone AMG alloys.

Both are fitted with the AMG Line appearance package to give the sedans a suitably sinister look, spicing up the front and rear bumpers with a sportier bodykit. The Night Package also adds gloss black trim on the grille, front splitter, side sills, door mirrors caps, window line and rear diffuser. Inside, both special edition models are coated with Artico faux leather and Dinamica microfiber upholstery that matches the exterior. For the Stormtrooper-inspired CLA, the seats feature white and gray stripes with silver stitching on the upholstery and ambient blue lighting. The Vader-inspired black model features black seats with red stitching and ominous scarlet ambient lighting.

Elsewhere, both models are equipped with an array of Star Wars goodies. The Star Wars logo is shown on the puddle lights, and turning the ignition on and off will greet you with the unmistakable sound of R2-D2. There’s also a windshield sunshade showing Chewbacca, Luke Skywalker, Obi-wan Kenobi, and Han Solo on one side, with "May The Force Be With You" displayed on the reverse. The CLA180 seems like an odd choice for a special edition because, well, it isn’t very special – this isn’t a car that will get you up to lightspeed, packing a 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine that produces 121 horsepower and 148 lb-ft of torque. Priced at 5,040,000 yen ($44,960), the force is not so strong with this one.
