Limited-Edition Porsche 911 GT3 RS Celebrates 50 Years Of Carrera RS 2.7

Special Editions / 4 Comments

The all-new track-focused supercar looks like it was made for this look.

We've just been blown away by the reveal of the new Porsche 911 GT3 RS. This car has aerodynamic enhancements, suspension innovations, and clever cooling solutions that have genuinely pushed the goalposts further once again than any other automaker. And that's before you even consider how it looks and performs with the hardcore Weissach package. In fact, it took us hours to decide on just five of the car's coolest features. And like any high-end product, the sky is the limit when it comes to customization options.

But we may have already found our favorite spec, and it's thanks to a unique Porsche Exclusive Manufaktur creation littered with brilliant details. This, says Porsche, "will serve as inspiration for a limited-availability [...] offering exclusive to US customers: a Tribute to Carrera RS Package."

This is how you celebrate a 50th anniversary.

Porsche Cars North America CEO Kjell Gruner says, "America is the second home of the 911 and a special tribute exclusive to the US is the perfect way to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the 911 Carrera RS 2.7" from 1973, the car that started it all. The car you see here - complete with illegal-in-the-US-roll-cage - is a way of showcasing "exclusive options on the new GT3 RS with a one-of-a-kind list of accompanying items."

Full details will be revealed soon, but the important thing to remember is that Porschephiles are at work here, as Gruner makes clear: "This is a live project in its early stages, and is being created by enthusiasts, for enthusiasts as a joint effort between our colleagues in Zuffenhasuen, Flacht [the home of Porsche's Motorsport Centre] and our team in America."

Until more info becomes available, let's get a taste of what to look forward to.

On display at Monterey Car Week, the car is finished in non-metallic white with accents in Python Green as a direct reference to the iconic white and green seen on the original. The side intakes are painted in white, too, while the forged aluminum wheels and wing highlights are in the viridescent hue. To make this color scheme pop even better, Porsche has deleted red from the rear taillights and third brake light. At the other end of the car, the headlights get a subtle white pinstripe ring, an upgrade that is not currently available through the normal list of factory options. The brake calipers are presented in a plain black finish.

Open the carbon fiber doors (a first for the GT3 RS), and you're greeted by a classy cabin dripping with style. Door sills with the "Tribute to Carrera RS" script are the first hint of a special experience inside. Leather and Race-Tex microfiber suede take care of the big surfaces, using green stitching to add contrast. The shade is also evident in the embroidered headrests and an ultra-fine accent on the white interior trim panels. White is used for the headrest supports of those carbon-backed buckets and the sleek GT3 RS badge behind the shift lever.

We're in love, and we can't wait to see just how the final US-exclusive package will look. Also, to the rest of the world, we have two words: Suck it!
