The Ford Bronco Raptor will debut in 2022, as confirmed by Blue Oval CEO Jim Farley. To date, no competing brand has a direct rival; the Jeep Wrangler Rubicon 392 will probably be the closest thing. A hardcore SUV arms race could soon begin.

Following the revelation a few days ago of a series of lightly camouflaged photos of a pre-production Bronco Raptor in action, we now have a brief video of that same vehicle dancing in the mud. It sounds pretty intense with the SUV's exhaust system in action as the engine revs up. Watching those tires spin as the vehicle takes off is quite enjoyable. What's also crystal clear is that the Bronco Raptor isn't powered by a V8. That engine note is clearly not eight cylinders worth of power.

Although it's still unconfirmed by Ford, the hardcore SUV will likely get the same 3.0-liter EcoBoost V6 found in the Explorer ST where it unleashes 400 horsepower and 415 lb-ft of torque. Expect very similar numbers for the Bronco Raptor. Another potential engine candidate is the F-150 Raptor's 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6 with 450 hp at 5,850 rpm and 510 lb-ft of twist at 3,000 rpm.

Regardless of what's ultimately under the hood, it'll be a step up from the currently most powerful Bronco's 2.7-liter twin-turbo V6 with 310 hp. The Wrangler 392 Rubicon, to compare, has 470 hp thanks to its Hemi V8.

What can't be confirmed at this time is whether or not Ford is prepping a Bronco Raptor R. An F-150 Raptor R, due in late 2022, is expected to have the Mustang Shelby GT500's 5.2-liter supercharged V8 though it'll probably be detuned to "just" 750 hp.

As far as styling goes, the Bronco Raptor will have a new front end with the "Ford" name boldly planted in the middle of the grille, larger fender flares, and a set of 37-inch off-road tires. A debut could happen fairly soon because Ford aims to have the Bronco Raptor in dealerships by next summer.
