Local Motors Shows Off 3D Printed Car In Detroit, It's Not Pretty, But You Can Download It

Local Motors

If that is indeed a good thing.

As a car, the Local Motors Strati is not especially impressive. The little electric vehicle can only go about 40 to 60 miles on a single charge, and it won't exactly be winning any beauty contests. But the idea behind the car is most definitely an interesting one. The car is made on a 3D printer, and Local Motors was actually building one live at the Detroit Auto Show (it was loud). There was a completed vehicle there as well, and The Verge has video.

This is obviously just a prototype, but it will be interesting to see whether this technology will eventually be able to make more sophisticated cars, or if it ends up down a technological cul-de-sac.
