Considering the company hasn't built a clean-slate new car since the Evora in 2008, nobody expected Lotus to present an electric hypercar as extraordinary as the Evija. With two electric motors producing a combined output of 1,972 horsepower and 1,253 lb-ft of instant torque, the Lotus Evija is the world's fastest production car and helped generate some much-needed publicity for Lotus. Production will begin later this year and will be capped at just 130 examples. If you can afford the eye-popping $2.2 million price tag, you may want to act fast because Lotus has confirmed the first year's allocation has already sold out.

With such exclusivity, Lotus wants every Evija that leaves the factory to be special. Buyers can extensively customize their Evija using a special touch-screen configurator designed specifically for Lotus.

To give us a taste of the Evija buying experience, Lotus has provided a virtual tour of the hypercar's high-tech configurator for us mere mortals that will never afford one. According to Lotus, the configurator was developed using advanced gaming software, and uses a powerful graphics processor to create photorealistic images and animations, allowing customers to visualize their car from every angle.

The configurator also utilizes an advanced imaging technique known as ray-tracing. Using this technology, customers can virtually place their Evija into multiple environments around the world to see what the exterior colors look like in localized sunlight levels. Finally, a personalized 360-degree fly-through film is created for each customer. New images released by Lotus created in the configurator also showcase some of the hypercar's previously unseen color options.

We get to see the Evija inside the Lotus Design studios at Hethel, UK, finished in Atomic Red with a Carbon Black accent pack, while a new animation shows the car in Solaris Yellow and Carbon Black.

Each customer will also receive a unique gift from Lotus at regular intervals, including a hand-crafted build book containing images of the customer's unique car during key moments of its construction. "We know every customer journey will be unique and our highly experienced customer relations team is ready to support any requests," said Simon Clare, Executive Director of Global Marketing at Lotus. "With state-of-the-art digital tools such as the new configurator, we can accommodate customer preferences and requirements from anywhere in the world at the touch of a button."
