It's been more than three years now since the Lucid Air was first revealed in concept form, and we've been waiting ever since to see the finished product. But that wait will soon be over, as the electric-vehicle startup has announced that the production vehicle will debut just a few months from now.

That will take place at the 2020 New York Auto Show in April. But even before that comes around, Lucid Motors is already opening the order books for reservations. So if you're already convinced that you want one, you can send in your $1,000 to secure your spot on the list.

Targeted directly at the Tesla Model S, the Lucid Air (in concept form at least) stretches just 0.4 inches shorter from nose to tail, providing ample interior space, all wrapped in a design more evocatively futuristic than its intended rival. And it'll have the voltage to back it up, too.

Lucid aims to offer its debut electric sedan with an incremental array of electric powertrain options, with batteries ranging from 75 to 130 kWh, offering up to 1,000 horsepower for a 0-60 mph time of just 2.5 seconds. A prototype has already lapped Laguna Seca in just 1:48.18, handsomely beating the record set by the Jaguar I-Pace.

Final specifications are expected to be announced closer to its reveal in April, with the first production models set to roll off the assembly line at Lucid's new factory in Arizona by the end of this year. Construction of the Casa Grande facility, about halfway between Phoenix and Tucson, is still underway, with the structural steel skeleton expected to be complete by the end of next month.

In the meantime, Lucid is building a fleet of 80 pre-production prototypes, and promises to release updates on its testing along the way. So stay tuned for for more. You know that Elon Musk and company will be.
