Lucid Air Will Smash Tesla's Quarter-Mile Record

Electric Vehicles / Comments

There could be a new EV drag racing king.

It seems like more than half of all drag race videos on the internet include a Tesla Model S Performance lined up against some gas-engined supercar. With the new "cheetah stance" launch mode, the Model S Performance takes just 10.4 seconds to complete the quarter-mile sprint, making it one of the quickest cars in the world. But Tesla's time as the undisputed drag race king could come to an end, according to a new teaser from Lucid Motors.

The American EV builder just posted a teaser video on Twitter, claiming that the upcoming Lucid Air set an EV quarter-mile record. The tweet includes the caption, "How fast is your dream? #LucidAir Dream Edition vs. 1/4 Mile Test Sonoma, CA. RSVP for the Lucid global reveal, Dream Ahead, on 9.9."

The teaser does not show much of the car itself but starts a count down from around 15 seconds. It cuts off around the 10.4-second mark, insinuating that Tesla's record may fall. This teaser specifically mentions the Dream Edition of the car, a two-motor variant with all-wheel-drive. The Lucid Air won't just defeat the Tesla Model S in a drag race either; it will go further on a charge as well. The EPA rates the Lucid Air with a range of 517 miles, crushing the 402-mile distance of the Model S.

The Lucid Air arrives on September 9, 2020, during an official reveal event that has been pushed back from April at the New York Auto Show. Lucid says its "groundbreaking online digital reveal" will include pricing information and performance specs. We expect the Lucid Air Dream Edition to cost well over $100,000, and produce over 1,000 horsepower. A three-motor version with 1,800 hp could arrive later with a significantly higher price tag and an even more impressive quarter-mile time.
