BMW Has Room For A New M4 CS Below The CSL

Rumor / 1 Comment

Nothing's been confirmed, but Frank van Meel's latest comments suggest something is coming.

Don't rule out the advent of a BMW M4 CS, says BMW's Frank van Meel.

The head of the Motorsport division told BMW Blog that a G82-based iteration might be on its way. "We had an M3 CS and M4 CS in the past, and we always said we have this regular competition CS and CSL letter. And we don't have a CS right now [in the M4 range], so there's still room," said van Meel.

Of course, this isn't confirmation that a new model is on the way, but it is promising. After all, we know BMW is developing the M3 CS. In theory, an M4 CS will be well-positioned and appeal to plenty of customers who want to retain the two-door styling but gain more power than the standard car.

So, what could we expect from a potential M4 CS G82?

The coupe will likely get an extra dose of aggression thanks to model-specific styling, possibly borrowed from the M3 CS. We've spotted the hardcore performance sedan out testing several times, with camouflage concealing a unique grille and a revised front bumper. Perhaps the M3 and M4 CS will also receive the CSL's yellow headlights and an exclusive wheel design.

We also expect the CS to weigh less than the conventional M4 Competition, but it won't be as light as the M4 CSL, which tips the scales at 3,640 lbs. The previous generation (F82) M4 CS was equipped with a carbon fiber hood and composite door panels to save weight, along with slightly more power than the standard model.

Power outputs would sit between the M4 Competition and the M4 CSL, which produce 503 and 543 horsepower, respectively.

BMW won't want the CS to tread on the CSL's toes, so we wouldn't be surprised if the mid-tier model has between 520 - 530 hp. The 3.0-liter inline-six should produce 479 lb-ft of torque, as the exact figure is claimed for the Competition and CSL models.

It will be interesting to see whether the CS retains its rear-wheel drive configuration. Previous reports have suggested that the M3 and M4 CS will debut with BMW's xDrive AWD system and an automatic transmission. These vehicles are rumored to arrive in 2023.

The CS models will probably be fitted with sporty bucket seats up front. There's a possibility the M4 derivative will sport no rear seats, while the M3 could boast individual rear seats like the M5 CS.

All will be revealed soon enough, but we certainly hope an M4 CS is in the works - after all, the last one was a masterpiece.
